Election Results

Attached are the election results for both the undergraduate and graduate vote. The blurb below describes the numbers in more detail.

The Ryerson Undergraduate Students’ Alliance (RUSA) received the most votes and is therefore the new undergraduate student union.

The majority of students voted “yes” for the graduate structure vote and are therefore the graduate student union.

Overall, the total number of voters was 1,734 (1,363 for the undergraduate vote and 371 for the graduate vote).

For the undergraduate ballot, 1,363 voted in the election. 172 of of those votes (12.6%) declined their ballot. Since the folks who declined their ballots were considered abstentions and are subtracted from the 1,363 total, 1,191 votes are counted in the first round. The threshold for a campaign to be declared a winner is 596 (which is 50% +1). As you can see, in the first round no one hit the threshold which moves the vote  to a second round.

Since RUSC received the fewest votes, they are removed from the second round of voting and their received votes (218) in the first round are distributed to the other groups based on students who identified their second preferred choice. Out of the 218 votes that RUSC obtained, 21 students who voted did not have a second choice, 141 listed RUSA, and 56 listed Ryerson First. With these new totals, (721 for RUSA and 449 for Ryerson First), the group that reached the 596 threshold was RUSA.

For the graduate ballot, 371 graduate students voted with 16 of those declining their ballot. This leaves 355 votes with 331 of those voting yes for RGSU and 24 students voting no.
